Building a Values-Based Culture: Lessons from Rwanda’s Remarkable Journey

We all know that culture has a significant impact on the success of a strategy. It can either enable or hinder the implementation of a strategy. The challenging part is understanding how to bring about a positive change in your culture, ensuring that it aligns with your strategy for maximum effectiveness. This is true regardless of the size of your organization.

In the case of Hassan Kibirango, Program Manager of iLead Rwanda, he faced the harsh reality that the culture of his country, Rwanda, had led to a horrific event – the genocide where millions of people were killed by their own neighbors. While most of us may not have experienced such a tragedy, we can still comprehend the devastation caused by the collapse of organizations like Enron and the detrimental effects of leadership failures on a massive scale.

Despite the immense problem faced by Rwanda, Hassan took decisive action to foster positive change in the country’s culture. He dedicated his time and energy to investing in the next generation of leaders.

Recognizing that the genocide 30 years ago occurred due to a breakdown of values-based leadership, Hassan, along with the President and other leaders of the country, became aware of the need for a transformation.

As a transformational leader himself, Hassan became the driving force behind an initiative to incorporate values-based leadership curriculum into schools across Rwanda. This initiative presents an opportunity to support and nurture the next generation of leaders, ensuring that such a tragedy never recurs.

In the interview with Hassan Kibirango on TransformationalLeadership.tv, he shares how the educational initiatives implemented in Rwanda are transforming the lives of the country’s youth, reshaping the culture, and offering them a future brimming with possibilities.

By watching this episode, you will not only learn about the catalyst that motivated Hassan to take action and drive cultural change for Rwanda, but you will also gain valuable insights and inspiration on how to implement change initiatives in your own organization or community.

I hope Hassan’s story will serve as a source of inspiration, motivating you to take the next step in bringing about the necessary change in your organization or the world around you.
